Diving While at Caigers Resort
by Terry Irvine
Our April weekend was blessed with exceptional weather, but during our October weekend we were reminded that winter was just around the corner. Brrrr! The combination of Caiger’s and 1000 Island Pleasure Diving has made scuba diving in the Rockport area the ultimate in convenience. . Wayne has all three of his boats, the Pleasure Diver, the Island Diver and the new boat, Osprey located at Caiger’s marina. There is ample parking and loading is made simple by several loading carts. The Pleasure Diver and the Island Diver are perfectly suited for small to medium size groups. The Osprey can accommodate up to 20 sport divers and 12 technical divers with ease. Caiger’s provides comfortable accommodations for our diving adventures. The restaurant provides excellent home cooked meals and box lunches while on the dive boat. Accommodation packages through Caiger’s are available for the diver when diving with 1000 Island Pleasure Diving. Dive fills and any other diving related requirement are handled by nearby Dive Tech Training center in Mallorytown.
During our April visit, we had a chance to “try out” Wayne’s latest purchase, the Osprey. The “Bimini Top” had not been installed, but the balmy April sun made it unnecessary. Twelve people fit comfortably on board the Osprey and after our requisite stop to check in with Customs, we were on our way to the wreck of the AE Vickery. Wayne and his crew at 1000 Island Pleasure Diving do an excellent job of making the border crossing as efficient as possible. Visibility at all dive sites in the Rockport area is excellent, even early in the season. The St. Lawrence River also warms up much quicker than the Great Lakes and by the end of April, water temperature was 54F. After an excellent dive on the AE Vickery, Wayne was ready top-side with hot chicken noodle soup, a 1000 Island Pleasure Diving trademark. After the required surface interval, we traveled to the site of the Kinghorn. The Kinghorn is one of the more popular dive sites in the Rockport area. Located just beyond the Rockport Marina and close to Caiger’s the Kinghorn makes an excellent second dive.. It is very intact and lies in 80 feet of water.
The operation can cater to sport divers and technical divers alike. Wrecks like the Kinghorn provide suitable exploration for the new wreck diver whereas the wreck of the Roy A Jodrey provides a exciting and challenging site for the advanced technical diver. During our dive season, we were able to introduce another group of divers to the beauty and spendor of the 1000 Islands and the marvelous wrecks beneath the water. Caiger’s and 1000 Island Pleasure Diving combine to provide a convenient means to explore the underwater realm of the 1000 Islands. Mid week or weekend adventures can be accommodated. If you prefer, Wayne can even arrange for a guided tour of the 1000 Islands aboard one of his boats for you and your family. Diving in Rockport is part of our annual ritual. Wayne Green with 1000 Island Pleasure Diving combined with Mark and Caiger’s Resort make the trip easy. Safe diving, Terry Irvine
